The novel includes much biological research into the evolution of innate capacities for nonviolence. The author based the events of their novel on much historical research, particularly the writings of peace historian Gene Sharp. It is based on historical realities of nonviolent resistance. The Sharer way of nonviolence is more than spiritual. Thus, the Sharers can never be subdued by force. When they are being threatened by an outside power, they resist nonviolently because they refuse to believe in power. The Sharers take egalitarianism for granted because they share and they lack the concept of "power-over", making their society one in which conflicts are settled without violence. They are peaceful beings who "share" - that is, they have a spiritual and linguistic union with each other and treat everyone equally. Sharers use genetic engineering to control the ecology of their planet. The inhabitants of this planet, known as Sharers, are all female. The novel is set in the future, on the fictional planet of Shora, a moon covered by water. The novel's themes include ecofeminism and nonviolent revolution, as well as Slonczewski's own knowledge in the field of biology. A Door into Ocean is a 1986 feminist science fiction novel by Joan Slonczewski. While we are talking about the cover it is as boring of a design as I can remember which is too bad because it is an expensive book. I would personally consider the Listener a novel or horror, released by a horror publisher in Cemetery Dance, I am not sure exactly why it was labeled on the cover as a "Novel of Suspense." I mean it is a novel of Suspense sure, but it is a novel filled with genuine moments of horror, and even supernatural elements. I Travel by Night was a neat little monster/horror/western that I enjoyed. It was a hell of a read Stephen King even called it McCammon's best. The Five was an action driven suspense novel about a Rock and roll band that mixed the music world with something like the Hitcher. Those were both returns to earlier styles of McCammon novels of the 80's and 90's. While I am not as big of a fan of his Matthew Corbett historical mysteries recent novels like The Five and I Travel by Night have hit my sweet spot. When I heard about this book coming out from Cemetery Dance I was beyond thrilled. Gone South, Mine and of course Swan Song are some of my favorite books of all time. I am not sure it is possible for him to write a bad book. His ability to tell a story effectively in the novel format is pretty much unmatched. McCammon is one of my favorite living writers. The second collection of essays by Irby ( Meaty, 2013) explores what it means to be “fat and black.” Though she has an active and diverse sex life, the author seems to prefer staying home with her cat, with whom she’s “trapped in this mutually abusive codependent relationship.” She watches a lot of TV and eats a lot of junk food while watching junk TV. Consequently, little was known about, for example, the irregular Canterbury weather patterns that would dominate the lives of Lady Barker and her husband for those three short years. Or even the first trilogy.īut wait, you might ask yourself, is that not the book that the show is based on? Isn’t it the first book of the series? The one that sets the stage for everything else? The one that introduces the Grisha, Sun Summoner Alina Starkov, and the swath of sentient darkness that tears Ravka in half? Isn’t season 2 going to adapt the second book? Here’s some unsolicited advice: Don’t start with the first novel, Shadow and Bone. If you’re super excited about season 2 of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone series and you’ve never read the Leigh Bardugo books it’s based on, you might be thinking about trying the main trilogy the show adapts. |
